Accounting playlist songs

Music exerts an extraordinary influence on so many people, lives, and cultures, and it’s astounding to see the range of its effects on others.

Music not only represents different cultures and tells different stories from all around the world, bringing people together, but music can also improve your health and well-being. Music stimulates the brain, which alleviates pain, heightens focus, reduces stress, replenishes energy, and lifts your spirits. Additionally, music allows us to feel connected to one another, regardless of location or background, based on all the emotions we share and experience in our lives, even reducing loneliness and feelings of isolation.

So, as an accountant or bookkeeper with piles of paperwork, ongoing stress, and clients to appease, it’s important for you to have different playlists and ways to listen to music, as music can have far-reaching impacts on your personal and work life.

If you don’t already have an accounting playlist or are looking for some more songs to add to one, we’ve created a list of 9 Uncat-approved songs to get you started. These songs might appeal to you as an accountant or bring out the accountant in you!

Cat Accountant — Cheryl Wheeler

We couldn’t make an accounting playlist without including Cat Accountant by Cheryl Wheeler!

Uncat is designed to help you save time and money by stopping you from herding (un)cats. Uncat syncs over uncategorized transactions from your accounting software to get client answers faster, then syncs the transaction back into your accounting software once you categorized and edited the transaction to your liking.

Since our mascot is a cowboy cat herding your uncategorized transactions, including this song was a no-brainer!

Uncat + Cat Accountant = match made in heaven

Taxman — The Beatles

If you haven’t already heard this song as a CPA, prepare yourself. This is the ultimate tune to crank up when preparing your clients’ taxes and tax forms, especially during the busy season. Tax season will become a breeze!

Yeah, I’m the taxman (yeah, I’m the taxman)
And you’re working for no one but me (taxman!)
— Taxman (The Beatles)

Bills, Bills, Bills — Destiny’s Child

While Beyoncé is one of the world’s most successful singers and songwriters, her origins trace back to Destiny’s Child. Bills, Bills, Bills was one of Destiny’s Child's more popular releases, and it depicts an angry goodbye cry of a woman whose boyfriend gave her the world and its riches, then began to ask for loans and use her credit card recklessly. The horrendous financial practices described in this song can make any accountant or bookkeeper recoil.

Money, Money, Money — ABBA

While this song is memorably performed by Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia, this pop classic from the mid-1970s tells the story of a woman who struggles with her finances (aren’t we all?):

I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay / Ain’t it said
— Money, Money, Money (ABBA)

I mean, who can’t relate to the plight of this woman? As you’re likely well aware, accountants endure the daily grind of accountancy and clients day in and day out. Working with money to earn money, right?

Mo Money Mo Problems — The Notorious B.I.G.

While having more money isn’t such an awful problem or issue to be facing, the reality is that the more money you earn, the more important managing your finances is.

It’s like the more money we come across / The more problems we see
— Mo Money Mo Problems (The Notorious B.I.G.)

Without managing your finances, “mo problems” will come barreling back towards you, which is why accountants are so important!

Billionaire — Travie McCoy, Feat. Bruno Mars

In this pop-rap song, Bruno Mars belts out his burning desire to be a billionaire. Being a billionaire would open so many doors—from appearing on the cover of Forbes magazine to playing golf with the president. But Bruno would take this immense wealth to help others as well:

Toss a couple milli in the air just for the heck of it / But keep the five, twenties tens and bens completely separate / And yeah I’ll be in a whole new tax bracket / We in recession but let me take a crack at it / I’ll probably take whatever’s left and just split it up / So everybody that I love can have a couple bucks / And not a single tummy around me would know what hungry was.
— Billionaire (Travis McCoy, Feat. Bruno Mars)

While this gesture is kindhearted, tossing around money like that is any accountant's nightmare. No receipts? You’ve got to be kidding me!

Eight Days A Week — The Beatles

The Beatles have too many amazing songs and No. 1 singles to not include more than one on this accounting playlist. The inspiration behind this song lies in a chauffeur who once drove Paul McCartney to John Lennon’s house. McCartney asked how things were going for the chauffeur, and the chauffeur replied,” Oh working hard—working eight days a week.” And honestly, that’s too relatable with how a lot of us feel about our jobs, especially accountants and bookkeepers during tax season or busy seasons.

Shake It Off — Taylor Swift

While this song isn’t directly related to money or finance aspects of accounting, accountants and bookkeepers tackle massive burdens and assignments for their clients and practices every day, which can even lead to conflicts or frustrations with their clients that they have no way to relieve. Whatever the problem is, it’s important to remember, as Taylor Swift says, to “shake it off,” so obviously, this is a must-have song for your accounting playlist. Plus, its unshakable catchiness and dancy beat will be sure to cheer you up even on your toughest days.

Don’t Worry Be Happy — Bobby McFerrin

Like with Shake It Off, this song is important to include on your accounting playlist because regardless of what’s happening at work or outside of work that’s affecting you and your job, it’s crucial to always prioritize your wellbeing and happiness, and worrying or stressing out will not help your wellbeing or happiness. As the song notes:

In every life we have some trouble/But when you worry you make it double
— Don't Worry Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin)

So no matter how gloomy or worrisome the situation appears, even if you feel like you encounter too many worrisome situations as an accountant or bookkeeper, stressing out about it will only make it worse, so try to find the silver lining instead of looking at the glass half empty.
