How to clean up uncategorized transactions for a new bookkeeping client using Uncat

Getting a new accounting or bookkeeping client is exhilarating, but cleaning up their books can be exhausting. It’s not unusual to inherit several years of uncategorized transactions that need to be assigned to the right Accounts so that you can run financial reports, analyze and compare then-and-now budgets and spending, restate taxes if necessary, and lay the foundation for a better process going forward. Hundreds of accountants and bookkeepers use Uncat to efficiently clean up the books with their clients. Here’s how to do it:

1.

Choose which Accounts to sync from QuickBooks Online (or Xero or QuickBooks Desktop) to Uncat.

2.

Select a Sync Start Date. Uncat will sync from that date up to the present.

Note: Uncat will sync back to the Sync Start Date or to the Close Date if the books have been closed, whichever is more recent. If you want to do a historical clean up, you’ll need to make sure the books aren’t closed for that period since transactions aren’t updatable when the books are closed.

3.

You can now go to the Uncat dashboard and see all the uncategorized transactions for that period. By default, Uncat makes it easy to get descriptions and receipts back from your clients. You can then categorize the transactions in Uncat and sync back into QuickBooks Online to complete the clean up. Optionally, you can ask your clients to categorize transactions. You’ll then be able to review their selections in Uncat and either approve or override.
